Hi friends, I returned today with my journey recap to Melbourne. My beautiful cousin and I did stay overnight – we flew from Sydney on Thursday morning and packed all day by exploring. And when I said I was packaged, I was really crowded! So if you have ever wondered if you can see Melbourne in a day, the answer is yes, you really can. This is what we do and all the amazing views we see.
What is Melbourne like?
If I have to conclude Melbourne in one word, it will happen Cold – This is very full of characters. There is a coffee shop everywhere serving the best coffee I have ever felt. It’s smooth, smooth, aromatic and so delicious! The streets of life with colorful art, and I especially like the path. They are full of unique small cafes, unique shops, and colorful murals. Everything – well, that’s so cool!
Something that really stands out for me is fashion. Melburnians are So Dress well. Walking around, it feels like I’m in a photo shoot of Artsy magazine. People seem to use most of it in neutral – black, white, modest – and they really are acting accessory games. The right touch, never above. As if everyone quietly agreed to follow Coco Chanel’s advice: release one thing before leaving the house. Very cool and very elegant.
Can you really see Melbourne a day?
Most of what you want to see is in a walking distance, but if you are tired, the tram is there to save your feet. Did you know there is a free tram zone in the city center? We walked more than 24,000 steps that day, but we also used the tram well – they seemed to appear miraculously when we needed it, and we hardly had to wait. I am very impressed with the Melbourne transportation system!
So, can you really see Melbourne a day? Ummmm … I’ll say yes and no. You can definitely mark many of the main attractions because the city is very compact and easy to be navigated. But if you want to roam, soak everything, and maybe sit in a cute cafe with coffee (or two), then a few extra days will be a goal. Which says, if everything you have is one day, do it. You will still feel what makes Melbourne so special.
Melbourne in a day
Bourke Street Mall
If you like shopping (like me), then Bourke Street Mall is the place! You will find all big name shops, such as Myer, David Jones, Zara, and more. But what really makes me impressed is how many buildings around the mall have been carefully preserved. Wherever you see, there is an architecture of a beautiful old heritage. I like how Melbourne keeps the charm of historic most intact, with a touch of modern style mixed and not vice versa.
And I have to say, the H&M shop really makes me fascinated! It was amazing and looked very upper class.
Victoria State Library
Impressive building! I said to my cousin that if I have a place like this to learn, I might have considered doing a master’s degree. Once you step into the reading room, you just feel smarter.
Chinatown
So many bright colors and many choices of delicious food.
Hardware path
Lane hardware is full of bars and restaurants. Extraordinary atmosphere!
Lane Hosier
Hosier Lane is one of my favorites because there is street art everywhere.
I had to laugh when I saw the name of my son who was bigger and brave. Can he become a secret street artist ??
Street Flinders Station
We stood at the top of the station and saw all the platforms – there were so many! From Flinders Street Station, training to the suburbs throughout Melbourne and even exit to the regional region. When I saw it, I knew I had seen this station before. Then I remember that it was displayed in my favorite episode of the series (but unfortunately short), Our life time. Ha!
Yarra River
We walked on the Prince’s bridge, and right below it was the Yarra River.
Victoria National Gallery
Right in the NGV entrance, there is an amazing glass wall with running water underneath. You can also see it from outside.
We roam through all kinds of extraordinary appearance. We see everything ranging from paintings and sculptures to fashion and furniture – some of them are modern, some of them are historic. All that is beautiful.
Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria – Melbourne Gardens
Royal Botanic Gardens is so peaceful and fertile – you will never guess you are still in the middle of the city.
I know I will have fun in Melbourne, but it makes me surprised more than I have ever expected. Seeing the city in a day is very fantastic, but I want to come back and really soak everything in a few days. Melbourne must steal my heart on this trip!
